From the day of its inception in 1964, the department of Zoology made a conspicuous headway in the arena of imparting education to the promising youth who may soar to the acne of success. Prof. D. S. Jajurley, Head of the department, played a role of progenitor for the generation who succeeded him. He also played a key role in the form of prominent positions in the RTM Nagpur University. During his incumbency as head, the Dept., of Zoology thrived and witnessed the halcyon days that produced the personalities who hold eminent positions today. He was the recipient of the best teacher award of Govt. of Maharashtra in 1982. He also held the position of chairmanship of Board of Studies, Maharashtra State Board of the Secondary and Higher Secondary Education. He also occupied the position of Dean, faculty of Science, RTM Nagpur University, Nagpur.

In 1965, Agricultural Entomology was attached to the Dept, which was, later on, separated only to join the Agricultural University established in the year 1968-69. Our colleagues, appointed in the department on 20th June 1965 were Prof. M. A. Quazi and Prof. J. D. Mahajan to assist H. O. D. in shouldering the responsibility of the department.

Prof. Shelgaonkar, who was then working with department, became Principal of the Agriculture College of our parent institute when separated in 1996.Teachers training programs were organized in 1978, 79 and 80 for secondary and higher secondary school teachers of Chandrapur District to keep them abreast with the latest knowledge of the subjects.

We feel proud that our department had organized a workshop under the COSIP for all the University teachers in 1979. It was presided over by Dr. Gopal Krishna, Dean, Institute of Science.

In 1998 Prof D. S. Jajurle retired and was succeeded by Prof M. A. Quazi from December 3, 1997 to April 30, 2001. Prof. J. D. Mahajan took the charge as H.O.D. on April 30, 2001 and efficiently steered the departmental activities till April 29, 2002. On April 29, 2002 Prof. V. M. Kalpande took additional charge of the Department until he handed over the strings of the Department to Dr. A. P. Sawane on March 19, 2004.

Since January 20, 2003, Dr. A. P. Sawane, as head, is ardently organizing various competitions, seminar on syllabus and on other innovative ideas that creep into his mind. The creative faculty of his Departments help others to take a deep in the ocean of knowledge.
